Transit options expand in Austin area as Eastside Bus Plaza opens

The new Eastside Bus Plaza will merge Capital Metro and CARTS service, connecting rural areas and Austin.

AUSTIN, Texas — Capital Area Rural Transportation Systems (CARTS) started bus service at the new Eastside Bus Plaza Monday morning, bringing more transit options to Central Texas.

The Richard A. Moya Eastside Bus Plaza will serve as a transit hub connecting four Austin-area Capital Metro routes and nine CARTS routes.

Two of the Capital Metro routes will connect to Downtown Austin every 15 minutes. A CARTS route will also connect to Austin Bergstrom International Airport

A 2,200-square-foot passenger terminal building and outdoor courtyard are part of the new plaza at 363 Shady Lane, near State Highway 183 and East Cesar Chavez Street.

Leaders from CapMetro and CARTS held a morning press conference Monday to celebrate the first day of service. A full grand opening is set for September.

CARTS serves nine counties surrounding Austin, including Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Travis and Williamson counties.
