AUSTIN, Texas — Austin's notable Sixth Street will be open on the weekend to vehicular traffic for the first time in 22 years, according to KVUE's media partner The Austin American-Statesman.

The portion of East Sixth Street between Congress Avenue and Interstate 35 has typically been closed to vehicular traffic on weekends and during special events, such as Austin's Pride Parade.

Austin police told the Statesman that they will open Sixth Street to vehicular traffic moving forward and said the policy will be reevaluated each weekend.

“Our anticipation is that being the bars will be closed, we will have minimal pedestrian traffic on the weekends,” downtown area police Lt. Chris Gwaldo told the Statesman. “If there is no need for a safety enclosure of Sixth street to keep pedestrian and visitors safe, we will not be closing the streets.”

Vehicular traffic on Sixth Street will be prohibited again from Thursday through Saturday during the evenings after bars reopen, according to the Statesman.

“There is no set date to when we will be doing the weekly enclosure,” Gwaldo said.
