CapMetro train involved in deadly incident with pedestrian near Hancock Center

The incident happened around 10 a.m. Saturday along the Red Line. CapMetro said the pedestrian was in the right-of-way, on the tracks, and was not in a crosswalk.

AUSTIN, Texas — Capital Metro (CapMetro) said it is investigating after “an incident involving a CapMetro train and a pedestrian” that killed one person near the Hancock Center shopping area on East 41st Street in Central Austin on Saturday morning.

The Austin Police Department (APD) said they received a call around 9:20 a.m. for a "crash hot shot." CapMetro said the pedestrian was in the right-of-way, on the tracks, and was not in a crosswalk along the Red Line.

Police said one person died in the incident. APD and Austin Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) both responded to the scene and are investigating.

Following the incident, a CapMetro train was stopped at the crossing of the Interstate 35 southbound service road near East 41st Street. Traffic was being diverted through the I-35 underpass.

TxDOT and APD assisted with traffic in the area.

As of 1:30 p.m. Saturday, the scene was clear. Trains have returned back to their normal schedules.
