AUSTIN, Texas — To make way for some big changes at the intersections of Interstate 35 and US 183, a long-term closure of one major flyover is about to begin.
Starting Sunday at 10 p.m., the existing northbound I-35 to northbound US 183 flyover will close to traffic, weather permitting. During this closure, crews will demolish and reconstruct a portion of the flyover in a process that could take about four months.
During the closure, a long-term detour will be put in place. Northbound I-35 drivers can use the Rundberg Lane exit (#241) and take the non-signaled U-turn at Rundberg Lane to access the new southbound I-35 to northbound US 183 flyover. To manage this traffic flow, the U-Turn at Rundberg Lane will be closed to local traffic. Drivers will then need to use the signalized intersection at Rundberg Lane to access the southbound I-35 frontage road.
Also on Sunday at 11 p.m., the southbound I-35 to northbound US 183 and southbound I-35 to southbound US 183 flyovers will open, providing direct access between the two highways.
"This marks a significant milestone in the project that will ultimately add three new flyovers to the interchange," TxDOT said.
The changes are part of the $124.2 million Texas Clear Lanes project that began construction in 2018. It's expected to be finished late this year.
