AUSTIN – Improvements designed to reduce congestion at the intersection of U.S. 290 and State Highway 71 in Southwest Austin are set to go into effect this week.

The intersections have been designed as continuous flow intersections (CFI), which allows traffic turning left and thru traffic to move through the intersection safely.

With the design, left-turning traffic will move to the outer edges of the road via a traffic signal before the actual intersection. Drivers will pass across the stopped incoming traffic and make the left turn at the actual intersection.

A continuous flow intersection opened in May 2014 at Aquarena Springs Drive and Interstate 35 in San Marcos.

Earlier this year, the intersection of U.S. 290 and Joe Tanner Lane opened with a "Michigan Left" turn. Traffic wishing to turn left must turn right then follow signs to make a U-turn at a median crossover.
