AUSTIN, Texas — One person died and several others were treated by medics following a crash on South Capital of Texas Highway, also known as Loop 360, on Thursday, Dec. 7.
Around 12:40 p.m., Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) medics responded to a single-vehicle crash on South Capital of Texas Highway southbound, near Stoneridge Road. ATCEMS said four patients were involved, and one patient was pinned inside their vehicle.
Austin Fire Department crews arrived on the scene to help remove the pinned person. Around the same time, the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department stated the crash on Loop 360, near Walsh Tarlton Lane, had several southbound lanes blocked.
A short time later, ATCEMS said the pinned person had been removed and medics were treating them. Medics were also evaluating the other patients, and three people had been declared trauma alerts.
At 1:14 p.m., the Texas Department of Transportation's Austin district posted that all lanes of southbound 360 at Walsh Tarlton were closed.
A few minutes later, ATCEMS said one adult patient had been declared dead at the scene. At 1:53 p.m., ATCEMS said two of the other patients had refused transport.
In an update on Tuesday, Dec. 19, police identified the victim killed in the crash as 21-year-old Byron Gutierrez-Rodriguez. APD said he was a passenger in the car that crashed.
This incident is being investigated as Austin's 83rd fatal crash of 2023, resulting in 86 deaths for the year. On the date of this crash in 2022, 104 fatal crashes resulted in 108 deaths.
