TxDOT looking to improve US 290

TxDOT is looking to transform a four-lane road into a six-lane highway, among other advancements.

AUSTIN, Texas — Drivers going from Austin's Oak Hill neighborhood to Dripping Springs might soon have an different experience on the road.

On Jan. 30, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to host a rescheduled meeting with the public in Dripping Springs to discuss potential advancements to a 13-mile range along US 290.

The proposed plans would impact Oak Hill through Dripping Springs, shifting a four-lane road into a six-lane highway and prioritizing ramps for entry and exits from RM 1826 to RM 12.

Other changes include adding frontage roads in each direction and shared paths and eliminating main lane traffic signals.

The project first started in 2019 after TxDOT recognized an increase of drivers in the Austin area.

"With traffic volumes expected to double by 2045, upgrades are needed to improve safety and mobility in the corridor; enhance accessibility for residents and businesses; improve connectivity; improve emergency response times; and minimize impacts to the community and natural environment," a TxDOT fact sheet said.

The department wants to include public opinion in the decision-making process. Those interested in participating can attend the upcoming meeting at 6 p.m. on Jan. 30 at the Dripping Springs Event Center, located at 1042 Event Center Drive.

According to the fact sheet, additional steps will include public meetings in the summer and winter 2024, with a public hearing in fall 2024. Dates are subject to change.

After meeting with the public, the project should move into its design process and final construction.
