AUSTIN — Thanks to an influx of cash from taxpayers, the city of Austin is making major progress in fixing up some of the most dangerous intersections.
After voters approved a $15 million mobility bond in 2016, Austin streets have gotten safer.
Now, they're getting ready to tackle their next project: 45th and Red River Street.
They'll adjust signal timing and reassign lanes, creating a left turn lane at the intersection.
"Right now, if you go the intersection of 45th and Red River... there are no left turns, no exclusive left turns for the vehicles on 45th Street -- so that is causing crashes in that certain location. So when we provide the indicative left turns, it's going to provide a particular phase at that intersection, and it's going to reduce crashes at that intersection," says Upal Barua, Program Manager, transportation safety for the City of Austin.
Cap Metro is helping out with this project. The agency is contributing $75,000.
