AAA: Nearly 4 million Texans to travel by car ahead of Thanksgiving this year

AAA Texas predicts 3.6 million Texans will travel by car this holiday season.

AUSTIN, Texas — Texans can expect busy travel times by air, and on interstate highways, ahead of Thanksgiving. AAA Texas has the best and the worst times for you to leave for a trip.

For Texans in Austin or Dallas leaving the day before Thanksgiving, the best time to leave is before 8 a.m. or after 8 p.m. The worst time to leave is between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

For Texans who are traveling via plane, the best day to fly is Thanksgiving day.

"AAA Texas predicts four million Texans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving," the organization said in a release.

This is nearly 95% of pre-pandemic levels.

This year is projected to be the sixth busiest Thanksgiving travel holiday since AAA started tracking travel in 2000. AAA Texas predicts 3.6 million Texans will travel by car this holiday season.

“Travel for Thanksgiving continues to rebound to nearly pre-pandemic levels as families and friends are eager to enjoy time together during the holiday weekend,” said AAA Texas Vice President and General Manager Galen Grillo. “Plan ahead, consider working with a trusted travel advisor and remember proper vehicle maintenance to help prevent breakdowns.”

Airline travel also increased by 6% from last year. AAA Texas travel tips also include reserving parking spots, arriving early ahead of long TSA lines and trying to avoid checking bags for more flexibility.

“With travel restrictions lifted and more people comfortable taking public transportation again, it’s no surprise buses, trains, and cruises are coming back in a big way,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster. “Regardless of the mode of transportation you have chosen, expect crowds during your trip and at your destination. If your schedule is flexible, consider off-peak travel times during the holiday rush.”
