AUSTIN, Texas — On Thursday, American Airlines announced 14 new flights from Austin’s airport, including 10 new domestic and four new international destinations.
Nonstop domestic flights from Austin will include three-time daily service to El Paso; twice-daily service to Cincinnati, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri; and daily service to Jacksonville, Florida; Oklahoma City; Reno, Nevada; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Central Texans will have four new international options to consider, as American adds nonstop service to Cancun, Mexico; Liberia, Costa Rica; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
The carrier will also begin year-round nonstop service from Austin to Los Cabos, Mexico, and Nassau, Bahamas, following this summer’s successful seasonal service.
The new flights launch in September for some domestic routes and in October and November for other flights. Customers will be able to purchase these new flights starting June 14 on the American Airlines website.
The airline said it launched the new routes to meet increased customer demand.
“Earlier this year we added more flights from Austin, and customers have spoken: they want more,” said Brain Znotins, American’s vice president of network planning. “We're eager to offer our customers even more opportunities to reconnect with family, friends and colleagues. Together with our partners, we’re making it easier than ever to connect Austin with the world.”
The new routes are in addition to the 14 new destinations American announced in March. This week, the airline is celebrating 40 years of serving Austin.
“For the past 40 years, American Airlines has connected Austin and Central Texas with the world,” Austin Mayor Steve Adler said in a statement. “We couldn’t be happier with today’s announcement of new and expanded service in AUS. We look forward to continuing our successful partnership with American for many more years to come.”
The announcement comes after a year of air travel declines at Austin's airport and across the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. But since the start of 2021, renewed confidence in the Austin market has prompted several major demand-driven growth announcements for the airport.
In May, Spirit announced three new routes and Viva Aerobus announced plans to launch with two new destinations from Austin's airport. A month earlier, Allegiant Airlines said it would make AUS a base for operations, which includes a $75 million economic investment in the region. A new flight to Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines also launched in April. And in March, Southwest added seven new routes from the Capital City.
On Thursday, Alaska Airlines also announced a new route connecting Palm Springs to Austin. It starts on Nov. 19.
