Climate update: Tracking a hot and possibly dry August

July was cooler than average, but August is looking to be much hotter.

AUSTIN, Texas — We had a wetter and cooler-than-average July. In fact, we had the eighth-wettest July on record at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, as a rogue storm on July 6 dumped nearly 2.5 inches of rain.

Camp Mabry did not receive nearly as much rain, despite the active pattern, only getting a total of 3.03 inches – good for the 33rd wettest July on record.

Hoping for the same for August? Well, you'll likely be out of luck.

We're tracking above-average temperatures for most of Central Texas, with the Austin metro looking at a slight chance of below-average precipitation. Keep in mind that the average high temperature at Camp Mabry in August is 97.8, which makes it the hottest such metric of the year.

Additionally, our average precipitation is 2.74 inches, which is good for the sixth-wettest month on average at Camp Mabry.

Judging by the next seven days, it's likely we will see conditions that are consistent with the temperature outlooks posted by the Climate Prediction Center. We're tracking triple-digit heat for each of the next seven days, with a high Saturday forecast to reach as high as 104 degrees.

Remember, it's important to drink plenty of water and limit strenuous outdoor exertion, especially as "feels like" temperatures reach the 109 degree range.

Stick with the KVUE weather impact team as we track the hottest time of year in Central Texas.

Triple-digits for the next week
