Heavy rain, lightning force delays for Austin-area events Wednesday night

Kickoff for the Austin FC match against the Portland Timbers at Q2 Stadium was scheduled for 8 p.m. but was postponed until the threat of lightning had passed.

AUSTIN, Texas — At least two large outdoor events in the Austin area were delayed on Wednesday night as heavy rain and lightning moved through the area.

Kickoff for the Austin FC match against the Portland Timbers at Q2 Stadium was scheduled for 8 p.m. but was postponed until approximately 30 minutes after the threat of lightning left the area. Kickoff eventually happened around 9:50 p.m.

The stadium advised those at the soccer match to seek shelter inside Q2 Stadium under the canopy or inside while the storms passed.

Meanwhile, a concert by LANY at the Circuit of the America’s Germania Insurance Amphitheater was canceled on Wednesday night.

Around 9:30 p.m., organizers said the remainder of the show would be called off due to weather conditions. Concertgoers can visit their point of purchase on Thursday after 11 a.m. for refund information.

Rain and storms will decrease in coverage through the rest of this evening, and lightning should be coming to an end for the Austin metro by about 10 p.m.

The KVUE Storm Team has had to increase rain chances for the Labor Day weekend, including game day for the Longhorns. Rain and storms could be around on Saturday, so be sure to stay tuned to the forecast if you're going to the game.
