Weather pattern may become more active for Halloween

A cold front could give us a treat of rain for the first time in a while, but it could be a trick for all the trick-or-treating.

AUSTIN, Texas — While we've experienced incredibly dry conditions over the past few weeks, we're tracking an actual, meaningful pattern shift that could bring meaningful rain chances to Central Texas.

However, this coincides with Halloween, which is on Thursday, meaning things could get a little interesting for the trick-or-treaters.

Here's what we're tracking.

Rain chances increase midweek

We've been quite warm this past week, with Sunday becoming the second day in a row in which we've at least tied our daily heat record (93 was last set in 1995), but not only will we be cooler by Halloween, we'll also have better rain chances, especially on Dia de los Muertos on Friday.

We're looking at a 30% chance for Halloween, with a 40% chance for Dia de los Muertos.

Halloween Rain Timing

For Halloween, we're tracking a slight chance out ahead of the front for a few scattered storms, and we've pegged this chance at 30%.

While timing is fluid, we're currently looking at a majority of the rains taking place before the trick-or-treating begins, but scattered showers are still possible while the kids are outside.

In addition to these chances, we're tracking highs in the mid-80s as we head into the afternoon hours of Halloween, and winds shift from a southerly flow to a northerly flow as that front moves through Central Texas.

Rainfall Totals

Aside from the rainfall possibility for trick-or-treating, a common question is how this may affects the drought in Central Texas.

Currently, our main long range models show anywhere from a half-inch to an inch and a half over the next week, with the European model showing one to two inches with the American GFS model.

By and large, this would be helpful, but we're still looking at models for two to five days out, so there is still a great deal needs to be hashed out throughout the week.
