AUSTIN, Texas — August 2020 is one for record books in the weather department.
As of Thursday, Austin has officially had its 19th day of triple-digit temperatures. This means we have tied the third-longest stretch of 100-plus degree days recorded at Camp Mabry.
Not to mention, every single day this month has been above average. Our average temperature at this time of the year should be 97 degrees.
How does this stretch compare to previous years?
If you remember August 2019, we had a 19-day stretch of 100-plus degrees that ended on Aug. 23. Records also show a 19-day stretch that occurred almost 100 years ago in July of 1925.
In 2001, Austin recorded a 21-day stretch that ended Aug. 1. We are only two days away from tying the second-longest stretch on record.
The longest stretch ever recorded at Camp Mabry happened in 2001. This is when we had 27 days in a row of 100-plus degree days and 90 days in total that year, which also set the all-time record of most triple-digit days ever recorded in one year.
The 7-day forecast shows that we could easily make it to the top two longest triple-digit streaks this weekend. We would need to record 100 degree days through next Friday (Aug. 28) in order to tie for first place.
