AUSTIN, Texas — While this summer's heat hasn't been as oppressive as last year, it certainly still feels like summer outside.

But global weather models are bringing in a wave of cooler overnight temperatures as we shift into our first weekend of September.

Starting as early as Sunday morning, a weak cold front is expected to bring our morning lows down into the 60s. This will be a breath of relief for early risers who have been fighting with warm, muggy morning conditions for months.

While the mid-60s will feel good, this puts us climatologically a touch early for fall-like temperatures. For the most part, our first significant cold front comes nearer to the end of September, between Sept. 17 and Sept. 23.

But a strong cold front is different than what we're anticipating in the coming days. The cold front arriving this weekend will only be enough to drop our overnight temperatures, while afternoon temperatures stay in the mid-80s.

Austin has seen cooler weather than this in early September. Below is a list of the coolest temperatures recorded for the first five days of all Septembers on record. All are below 60 degrees.

The coolest overall Septembers track through the 1900s as well, with September 1974 coming in first place. September 2001 is the only September in the past two decades that has been cool enough to make the top 25 list.
