ATCEMS responds to multiple heat-related incidents as temperature hits record high

An excessive heat warning was issued for much of Central Texas on Saturday.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) responded to several heat-related incidents on Saturday as the temperature hit a record 107 degrees in Austin, breaking the record of 105 from 2011.

Medics responded to at least five heat-related calls since 11 a.m., ATCEMS said.

ATCEMS said it responded to a wilderness rescue at 1710 Camp Craft Road, at the Hill of Life entrance to the Barton Creek Greenbelt, around 2:40 p.m. There were initial reports of an adult unconscious on the greenbelt, ATCEMS said.

Medics extricated the person from the trail and evaluated a second person.

In a separate incident, ATCEMS medics responded to the 900 block of W. Slaughter Lane, at the Mary Moore Disc Golf Course, around 1:15 p.m. after reports of an adult experiencing heat-related illness.

Medics and crews from the Austin Fire Department extricated the person off the course.

Anyone venturing outside on Saturday is asked to stay hydrated, pack a cooler with ice and water, avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages, dress for the heat in loose, light-colored clothing and wear a hat and sunscreen.

Those exercising should take breaks and seek the shade or air conditioning to cool down.

An excessive heat warning was issued for much of Central Texas on Saturday, with heat index values as high as 112 degrees possible.
