Forecast for viewing the blue supermoon over Austin tonight

Monday kicks off the first of several supermoons over the next few months.

AUSTIN, Texas — Over the past few nights, the moon may have looked bigger than usual as it phases into a full supermoon on Monday night.

Temperatures sizzled in the lower 100s Monday afternoon but should lower to the 70s and 80s for the late night hours.

Due to high pressure over the south central United States, Austin should have a great view of the supermoon in all its glory tonight.

In addition, skies are expected to be mostly clear, with little to no breeze. Perfect for stargazing.

This is actually the second full moon of August, which is why it is a blue moon.

Any full moon in August is named the sturgeon moon. So Monday night's moon is a "Blue Super Sturgeon Moon," which is quite a mouthful.

Supermoons are classified by the moon that appears 14% bigger and 30% brighter than a regular full moon.

If you miss this month's supermoon for any reason, no need to worry. There will be three more times to see a supermoon as we head through the next few months.

In a rare phenomenon, September, October, and November's full moons will all be supermoons.
