Feeling bad? Cedar season is just beginning in Central Texas

If you've been feeling a bit under the weather since the weekend, allergies might be to blame.

AUSTIN, Texas — As of Dec. 1, meteorological winter has begun. This also marks the beginning of the winter allergy season here in Central Texas.

Over the past couple days, concentrations of ragweed, grass and fall elm have fallen to near zero. Now, the KVUE Weather Team is tracking medium to high counts of cedar pollen.

If you're new to the Austin area, cedar pollen is notorious for making people feel sniffly, achy and even feverish – hence the nickname "cedar fever."

The Dec. 1 count of 130 gr/m3 (grams per cubic meter) is technically in the high category for cedar pollen, but cedar counts can go far beyond that during the peak of cedar season. Come January, cedar pollen can trend upwards of 1,000 gr/m3.

If you're feeling the effects of cedar already, you may want to consult an allergist or doctor before cedar spikes in January.

Cedar season typically begins to mellow by the second week of February.

Suffering from cedar fever? It's recommended that you stay inside if possible. Otherwise, you can cover up with a face mask or use a mixture of nasal spray and an antihistamine.

If you're seeking relief, the KVUE Weather Team is expecting a wash of rain to deplete cedar counts this Wednesday.

In the meantime, here is our current seven-day forecast for Central Texas:

Temperate days Monday and Tuesday. Watching for rains come Wednesday.
