AUSTIN, Texas — Summertime highs are quickly rising here in Central Texas. Our first week of consecutive triple-digit heat is expected this week, and it may tie or surpass records from previous years.
At this point in 2022, Camp Mabry had already recorded seven days of 100-degree temperatures or greater, the first one kicking off the summer early on May 21.
This year, we went into June on a milder note, with near-average temperatures. But this week, the Texas heat is back and probably here to stay for a while.
Below is a list of heat records for the week of June 12 to June 18:
In the upper atmosphere, a large dome of high pressure will stage itself across Texas this week, leading to hot, stable days with little to no rainfall.
The heat will build on itself throughout the workweek, with our hottest day expected to be Friday, forecast at 106 degrees. If we reach that, it will surpass 2022's record temperature of 103 degrees.
While Friday is expected to be the hottest day of the seven days, Thursday also has a fair chance of beating or tying the record of 104 degrees set back in 2011.
Looking ahead, over the next seven days, it is very likely Austin will continue to see above-average temperatures. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has given it a 70 to 80% likelihood through the end of June.
