Wildfires are one of the most deadly environmental killers on Earth. They can be caused my lightning, lava or something else involving Mother Nature. But did you know humans are the number one cause?

Here's a list of the top causes of wildfires:

Burning debris

Many areas are known for their burning ordinances where people like to burn trash or yard debris. It's important to know and be aware of burn ban notices and to also watch the wind speeds and directions, as this can carry fires great distances.

Cigarettes

This is a very common starter to wildfires, especially in the wake of drought conditions. Being mindful that cigarettes are not only considered litter, but also fire starters, can prevent thousands of annual wildfire events.

Arson

Malicious fires are not only dangerous, but can be deadly for those unintentionally involved. Like others, they can be carried great distances under the strain of drought conditions and high winds.

Fireworks

This is normally a seasonal starter of fires, however, it can still cause a great deal of damage. Amateurs need to be especially careful when shooting these off into unwanted territory or around other fireworks.

Lightning

Dry thunderstorms can lead to lightning sparking in dry areas and leading to some sort of a fire. Especially in an outflow boundary, the fire can reach great distances if winds are strong enough, and brush, grass or debris serves as a starter.

Volcanic eruption

This is common in obvious areas where volcanoes are closest to forecasts. It can also lead to the spread of dangerous fires spreading great distances and engulfing homes, schools, commercial buildings and automobiles.
