AUSTIN, Texas — After a dreary and rainy start to the week, it's easy to forget that parts of Central Texas are continuing to deal with drought conditions.
The most significant drought is currently across southern Caldwell County around the Luling area, where "extreme" drought has developed.
It's not an area-wide drought, however, as the Austin metro is currently experiencing only "abnormally dry" conditions and much of the Hill Country is not experiencing any drought at all. Drought conditions remain fairly widespread through eastern portions of Central Texas, including La Grange and Giddings.
The short-term weather forecast may bring some relief for the driest areas of South and Central Texas with small but daily rain chances for at least the next seven days.
The highest rain chances over the next week will likely take place this weekend, as a cold front approaches the area. Saturday and Sunday look like they will be the two wettest days.
As far as rainfall totals, it appears the highest numbers will fall across the Hill Country, where upwards of an inch will be possible in the next seven days.
The numbers quickly drop closer to the Luling area, where the rain is most needed, but anywhere from a tenth of an inch to upwards of a quarter of an inch will still be possible.

The longer-term outlook from the Climate Prediction Center also offers some hope. The eight- to 14-day outlook for March 18 through 24 suggests a decent likelihood of above-average precipitation across the Lone Star State, especially for areas east of the Interstate 35 corridor.
The KVUE Storm Team will continue to closely monitor the drought conditions across Central Texas.
