AUSTIN, Texas — We just wrapped up the 34th driest year on record for Austin, but things are suddenly looking much wetter for the first week of 2024. We're tracking 3 storm systems over the next 7 days that could all bring us some much needed rain.
The first storm system will arrive by Tuesday afternoon. We expect widespread rain through most of Tuesday afternoon and evening. Embedded downpours and rumbles of thunder will be possible, but we're not tracking any sort of a severe weather threat. This is just beneficial rain that we really need.
A widespread half inch to one inch of rain is likely for the KVUE area with this first round of rain. Some isolated pockets could see up to 2 inches of rainfall.
Even more rain is on the way later in the week...
The second round of rain will move in on Friday. Models remain in strong agreement that another system will produce widespread showers and a few embedded storms, but we won't know the exact timing for another couple of days.
As of now, the rain chance on Friday is 60 percent.
The third system will then arrive next Monday with yet another chance for scattered showers and storms. This system will also bring a strong cold front.
So in addition to the rain chance, we could see a pretty substantial drop in temperatures behind it for the rest of next week.
The KVUE Weather Team will continue to monitor this developing forecast.
