Windy weekend could bring first cedar spike of the season

It's that time of the year. A dry, breezy cold front means not just a big cooldown, but perhaps the return of cedar fever.

AUSTIN, Texas — The holiday season is upon us, and we're now looking ahead to the return of chilly weather to our forecast here in Central Texas.

Unfortunately, this time of the year means a dry and breezy cold front could bring more than just a drop in temperatures. We've been tracking low to moderate amounts of cedar over the past week, but a strong northwest wind could bring our first cedar spike of the season for this weekend.

The wind will calm down some late Saturday night and Sunday, but overall, expect breezy weather to last most of the weekend.

A strong northwest wind behind a dry December cold front is problematic for our cedar count. After reaching the medium category on Friday and Saturday morning, it appears that our first cedar spike of the season is likely for Saturday afternoon through Sunday. The wind will change directions on Monday, so we hope that cedar levels will return to more manageable levels early next week.

This front will also bring chilly weather. Wind chills will be in the 20s for parts of the Hill Country on Sunday morning, and Monday morning is likely to bring freezing temperatures to much of the KVUE area outside of the immediate Austin metro.

We'll be sure to keep y'all posted on the cooldown, and potential spike in cedar.

In the meantime, the extended forecast can be found below:
