AUSTIN, Texas — A cold front swept through Central Texas Wednesday morning, and now we're looking ahead to a more typical December weather pattern for the rest of the work week and into this weekend. Tonight will be quite chilly with Austin dropping down to about 40 degrees by Thursday morning. Most will stay above freezing, but a light freeze is expected for parts of Mason, Llano, and Gillespie counties.
After a chilly start, the afternoon on Thursday will be fantastic with sunshine and highs in the mid 60s. Thursday night will be chilly, but not quite as chilly as the night prior with low temperatures reaching the low to mid 40s.
A reinforcing shot of cool air will move in on Friday. This means Saturday morning will be our coldest morning of the week with Austin reaching the mid to upper 30s and a light freeze for many outside of the city. The afternoon on Saturday will be fantastic. Weather for the Texas-Clemson game will be perfect with a kick off temperature near 63 degrees under a sunny sky with a light southeast wind.
Our weather pattern then turns sharply warmer in the lead up to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. High temperatures on Christmas Eve will reach the mid 70s, and then there will be a chance for a few scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. The coverage of rain will need to be fine tuned in the coming days, but as of now the rain chance for Christmas Eve is about 30 percent.
Behind this system, Christmas Day looks warm and mainly dry with morning temps in the mid 50s and the afternoon reaching the low to mid 70s.
