AUSTIN, Texas — It's been a month full of triple-digit heat for Central Texas. So far, June has brought 14 days of triple-digit temperatures to Austin, and one more could be left to go before we turn the page into July.
The extreme heat this early in the summer has been the result of the "heat dome." Fortunately, this area of high pressure is now moving eastward through this weekend and early next week.
Now let's go into this with realistic expectations given the time of year, but this will bring us a small drop in temperatures and the chance for some rain.
We could still see temperatures peak around 100 degrees on Friday, but each afternoon after that will slowly but surely trend cooler by about one degree per day.
Temperatures could drop to the upper 90s for Saturday or Sunday afternoon. We expect highs to stay in the mid to upper 90s for Monday through Wednesday of next week. The average for this time of the year is 95, so we will technically still be warmer than normal, but it'll be a noticeable improvement relative to what we've seen recently.
So, what about rain chances? Again, go into this with low expectations. We are not expecting major, soaking rain. However, there will be a chance for isolated showers and storms by the Fourth of July, and we expect daily 20% rain chances to continue through the first half of next week.
The Climate Prediction Center continues to highlight Central Texas for above average rainfall on the 6- to 10-day outlook.
The KVUE Weather Team will continue to closely monitor this developing forecast.
