Protecting your car from hail damage: "With apple-sized hail, it's pretty destructive"

Hail is worse in Texas than any other state.

AUSTIN, Texas — As severe storms approach the Austin area, hail is a major concern. Hail is worse in Texas than any other state and Thursday's storms could result in hail falling that equals the size of apples.

KVUE News spoke with the Steven Lozano, the owner of a car repair service company called Dingz Happen.

Lozano is staying busy with hail claims. Typically, hail season in Texas is between March and August. He says that Texas is the number one state when it comes to hail claims and suggests parking your car in a garage, awning or some other sort of covered parking. If shelter cannot be found, Lozano says to consider placing blankets over the car and securing them with duct tape or another fastener.

"With apple-sized hail, it's pretty destructive. It could total cars potentially depending on the year, make and model and the mileage," Lozano said.

He laid out the kind of car damage hail can cause.

"It's a range, you can have cars that have 100 dents in total to maybe 900 dents in total, so it just depends on the severity of the storm," Lozano said.

Lozano also recommends having a good insurance deductible: ideally at a cost of 500 dollars or less.
