Drought update: Modest improvements locally after last week's rain

A 1% statewide decrease in "abnormally dry" conditions highlights improvements from last week.

AUSTIN, Texas — The latest drought monitor has been released, and we're tracking some modest improvements across Central Texas. There is a 1% increase in areas not currently in any drought category, largely due to rain from last Tuesday that wasn't counted until now because it fell past last week's cutoff point.

Portions of Gillespie County went from "abnormally dry" to not being in any drought category. Additionally, the "moderate" and "severe" drought levels also dropped by 1%, so we're seeing widespread but modest improvements to our drought.

We're tracking the possibility of a possible isolated shower or storm for the weekend, especially Saturday night into Sunday. But that comes with the price of triple-digit temperatures that are actually par for the course for seasonal averages.

We're tracking a high of 99 for Thursday and 101 for Friday and Sunday, with 102 expected Saturday.
