Drought improves in the Coastal Plains

Most of the Coastal Plains is now down from the "extreme" drought category.

AUSTIN, Texas — Thursday is upon us, which means a new drought monitor has been released.

We have seen more improvements, mainly in areas east of Interstate 35.

For example, in  the previous drought monitor, there was a sliver over Bastrop, Lee and Fayette counties that was in the "extreme" drought category. This week, that sliver has been eliminated and the entirety of those counties are now in the lower "severe" category, which saw a roughly 3% decrease statewide.

Additionally, portions of eastern Milam County have now fallen into the "abnormally dry" category, which saw a statewide increase of 4%.

As for areas not in any drought across Texas, that category saw a 7% increase – the largest move amongst the drought categories. And with the best rain chances coming Sunday into Monday along a frontal system, we could see more improvements, mainly north of Austin.

As for rainfall totals, the European model is looking at around a tenth to a half-inch of rain, which wouldn't do much for the drought situation at present but would allow us to continue to inch closer.

The American GFS model, on the other hand, barely gives Central Texas any measurable rainfall, which would be a detriment to our drought situation. However, the main area of rain is still three to four days out, so it's too soon to lock anything in at this moment.
