Drought Monitor update: Few improvements despite recent rain

Here's who saw the few improvements to their drought conditions.

AUSTIN, Texas — We've made it nearly to the end of another (hopefully) great week for us here in Central Texas, which leads us to the weekly drought monitor, published every Thursday. Here's the latest on how the drought looks locally.

Local Drought

Despite the best efforts of Mother Nature, with the widespread one to two inches of rain across much of the Hill Country, we did not get much help with our drought. However, we did see a notable improvement in Williamson County -- the elimination of the "dot" of "extreme" drought in the east-central portion of the county. In fact, we barely had any change statewide from last week, however the area not in a drought expanded by roughly one-and-a-half-percent, while areas that were "abnormally dry" decreased by one percent, with all other drought categories remaining roughly the same across Texas.

Rainfall Forecast

Additionally, we're tracking not much in terms of rainfall if at all for the weekend. We're only expecting around a few hundredths to a few tenths of an inch with the disturbance coming in from Central Mexico, and this would be locally limited to the Coastal Plains, which are not in any stage of drought. As far as the heaviest amounts from this system, we expect that to be confined to areas south of San Antonio, such as Laredo, Corpus Christi, Port Aransas and the Rio Grande Valley.
