Drought monitor update: Widespread improvements across Central Texas, statewide

Areas not in any drought increased by about 4%.

AUSTIN, Texas — There are many changes to this week's drought monitor compared to last week's, as expected due to the rain we received after last week's cutoff. We've seen big improvements statewide, including in Central Texas.

Most Central Texas areas, including Travis County, dropped a drought level. While some areas of our southern Hill Country counties, as well as Central Williamson County, are still under the "extreme" level of drought, Austin has fallen to the less-intense "severe" drought category. Additionally, some areas of the Coastal Plains are now under "abnormally dry" conditions, which is the lowest drought level.

As for the rest of the state, areas not in a drought saw a 4% increase, with the "abnormally dry" category decreasing by the same metric.

However, the "moderate" drought category saw the biggest statewide increase, around 9.5%. The "severe" drought saw a 5% decrease, but as of this week's monitor, there is no longer an "exceptional" drought in the Lone Star State, after the area near the Sabine River dropped to the "extreme" level of drought.

While this is welcome news for all of us, especially farmers affected by the drought, we still have a ways to go for us to completely be out of the drought.

There is a chance for precipitation on Monday, though the type is still to be determined based on the cold air. Stick with KVUE as we track that for you.
