New drought monitor shows significant improvement in Central Texas drought conditions

The entire KVUE viewing area saw drought conditions improve in a big way

AUSTIN, Texas — It's Thursday, which means a new drought monitor has been released.

This release is something that many Central Texans have been looking forward to. Because most of our recent rain fell past the deadline for last Thursday's drought monitor, it has been counted for this week's.

All of the KVUE viewing area saw tremendous improvement, as did the rest of the state. In fact, all drought categories saw a decrease of at least 3%, with the moderate, severe and extreme categories decreasing by around 10% to 15%.

While it's important to note the old cliché that "it's a marathon, not a sprint" when it comes to drought relief, this is a good start to what is expected to be a cooler and wetter season coming up with the El Niño pattern. However, we do not expect any real rain chances within the next seven days, so don't expect much movement on next week's drought monitor.

Stick with KVUE for the latest on your forecast as we track the progress of our drought relief.
