AUSTIN, Texas — Afternoon temperatures once again soared into the 80s for much of Central Texas Wednesday afternoon, but now we look ahead to a pretty dramatic change for the end of the week.
A cold front pushed through Central Texas overnight through early Thursday morning. While scattered showers and even a few isolated storms moved in, the main impacts to the area will be a large drop in temperatures and the continuation of breezy conditions.
Behind the cold front, we woke up to wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph Thursday morning. This may prompt a Wind Advisory for parts of the KVUE area.
With the front not bringing much rain, we're also expecting elevated fire weather conditions through the day, especially for the metro and the Hill Country. Please avoid any outdoor burning, and report any fires as soon as possible if one develops.
Cloud cover will stick around through the day on Thursday, keeping afternoon highs only in the low to mid-50s. This will be over a 20-degree temperature drop from the day prior.
Clouds move out Thursday evening, and this will set the stage for a few cold nights. A fairly widespread freeze is likely for both Friday morning and Saturday morning.
To be on the safe side, we recommend making plans to bring in any sensitive outdoor plants. Also be sure to plan ahead to protect your pets.
The City of Austin will open its cold weather shelters overnight Thursday. Learn more.
By Sunday afternoon, temperatures will once again begin trending warmer. Highs in the 70s on Sunday will be fairly warm for those running the Austin Marathon. Then we return to the low and mid-80s by the beginning of next week.
The KVUE Weather Team will continue to monitor this developing forecast.
