Tierra Whack brought ‘Whack World’ to ACL 2019

Rapper and singer-songwriter Tierra Whack interacted with her fans, and even the security, all throughout her set at Austin City Limits 2019 Music Festival.

AUSTIN, Texas — Rapper and singer-songwriter Tierra Whack interacted with her fans, and even the security, all throughout her set at Austin City Limits 2019 Music Festival.

As Whack’s DJ tried to warm up the crowd at the start of the set, his whole setup began to overheat and caused all of the hype-up tracks not to play correctly. The stage crew remedied this situation by bringing out a large fan and pointing it directly at the equipment.

The fan did the trick, and shortly after Whack was able to come onto the stage and perform. During the first song, she managed to end up off the stage, being carried by the crowd as she sang.

Her entire set was defined by interaction with the ACL audience. At one point, she brought a fan who was celebrating his birthday into the photo pit, where he asked if he could have her shoes. Whack promised to give him them after the set, which she did, and the fan ended up giving her a friendship bracelet in return.

“These are the only shoes I brought, so I have to go straight home after this,” said Whack. “I love you so much and happy birthday.”

Whack scolded the audience for not singing loud enough at one point but was impressed a few songs later when they cut the music and the song carried on through the crowd.

“Wow, they actually do know the song,” said Whack.

Throughout her set, she reminded the audience to keep their hands in the air, and security was no exception. She called for the security to lift their hands in the air as well and kept asking them to do so until they all did.

At one point, Whack took an event staff badge from one of the stage's camera operators and threw it into the crowd.

“You can do whatever you want,” Whack told the fan who caught the badge. “You work here now.”

A few songs later, she teased the camera operator that she took the badge from, telling him that he doesn’t work here anymore.

Whack also threw multiple objects into the crowd, including free merchandise, T-shirts and half-drunk cans of water for her adoring fans to frantically try and catch.

She ended her set by reminding the audience to “drink a lot of water and don’t do drugs.”
