Two new murals are coming to Downtown Austin, both dedicated to empowering women

The Downtown Austin Alliance Foundation is kicking off "Writing on the Walls," a week of art events dedicated to empowering women in the community.

AUSTIN, Texas — Downtown Austin will become a little more colorful this week with some new modern art sprouting up on street corners.

The Downtown Austin Alliance Foundation is kicking off its seven-day "Writing on the Walls" event with the creation of two large murals downtown.

"'Writing on the Walls' is a seven-day series of workshops, film screening, discussions, talks, artists engagement and new murals for Austin, all [based] around celebrating women and the empowerment of women in our community," said Molly Alexander, the executive director of the Downtown Austin Alliance Foundation.

The theme is the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

One of those murals can be spotted on the west side of The LINE Hotel on Cesar Chavez Street. One of the two artists working on that mural will be Shepard Fairey, who is best known for creating President Barack Obama's presidential campaign poster.

"The right to vote is very important to everyone of age, and democracy only works well if people vote. So I'm psyched for the anniversary and for the remainder that we're always moving toward greater equality," Fairey said.

Sandra Chevrier, a Canadian contemporary/pop urban artist, collaborated with Fairey on the new mural.

"I've done a couple of murals before, but not that large-scale. I'm excited. [Fairey] is a pro. He's been doing so many murals everywhere around the world, so I'm excited for this new venture," Chevrier said.

Sadé Lawson, a local Austin artist, will be creating a large mural on the northbound side of Lamar Boulevard.

"Every day starting tomorrow through next Monday, you can come and see the artists at work at The LINE. It's 12 to 14 stories. They'll be on big swings so you can watch them create in real-time," Alexander said.

It hasn't been announced yet what either mural will look like. For more information about the different events planned for Writing on the Walls, visit the Downtown Austin Alliance's website.
