Forever Families: Meet Delilah, an affectionate girl in need of special care

Delilah is nonverbal with special needs. She loves being outside, playing with animals and learning on her tablet.

AUSTIN, Texas — Delilah is a sweet 10-year-old girl who has been in Texas foster care for five years. She's nonverbal with special needs and once she feels comfortable with you, she becomes very affectionate. She will hold your hand and give lots of hugs.

KVUE's Hannah Rucker met up with her in Leander for an afternoon of playing outside.

Delilah's caseworker, Amanda Swafford, is hoping to find her a forever family who can provide the patience and the time it takes to properly care for a child with special needs.

"She does well in a structured environment. She's currently in a facility type setting but loves to go on outings and loves to be outdoors and with animals," Swafford said.

Swafford said Delilah has therapists that help her during the day at her home setting and at her public school.

She also enjoys learning on her tablet and playing with sensory-friendly toys.

To learn more about Delilah or to put in an inquiry to adopt her, visit her page on the Heart Gallery of Central Texas.

KVUE launched the Forever Families segment with Partnerships for Children (PFC) in June 2020 to highlight children in the Heart Gallery of Central Texas who need secure and permanent families. Every day, there are nearly 1,000 children waiting to get adopted in Central Texas, according to PFC.

Editor's noteThe children who are in the Heart Gallery program and featured in KVUE's Forever Families segments are children who have had every effort made on their behalf to connect them with family or others in their community to provide options for permanent, adoptive homes. Through no fault of their own, that hasn’t happened yet, and so in partnership with the Department of Family and Protective Services, we collaborate to bring awareness to KVUE viewers about these children in the hopes of finding them permanency before they age out.
