'Someone who won't abandon me' | Young girl in foster care hopes for a forever family

Sabrina has been in foster care for 12 years. She loves art and going to school and dreams of traveling the world.

AUSTIN, Texas — Sabrina is 12 years old and has been in Texas foster care since she was born. She currently stays in a group home in Central Texas and remains hopeful she will find a forever family.

"I'm hoping for someone that is going to care for me and not abandon me or use me," Sabrina said "I think the best thing is sticking with one place and seeing what I can do."

After first entering foster care as a baby, she moved several times throughout her childhood. But she's determined to make her experience in foster care into something positive.

"One day when I grow up, I'm going to keep this foster care experience in my mind still and believe that just because God put me here for a reason. It's not all bad," Sabrina said.

A young aspiring artist, Sabrina has a gift of making art out of just about anything she can find.

"For example, sometimes I'll take little pieces of cardboard and make furniture out of it. Crafting is my thing," Sabrina said.

KVUE's Hannah Rucker met up with Sabrina at the Austin Creative Reuse Center. The center gets about 50,000 pounds of donations every month, with a wide range of things that can be used to make something new. Program Coordinator Molly Shaw was able to give Sabrina a tour of the facility and let her make her own crafts.

"We're trying to show that these items can also be craft items and art items, so these are the things that are the closest to the landfill," Shaw said. "Austin is full of fun, junky kind of artists so this place is like heaven for them,"

Sabrina loves going to school to see her teachers and friends. She also has dreams of traveling the world someday.

KVUE launched the Forever Families segment with Partnerships for Children (PFC) in June 2020 to highlight children in the Heart Gallery of Central Texas who need secure and permanent families. Every day, there are nearly 1,000 children waiting to get adopted in Central Texas, according to PFC.

Editor's note: The children who are in the Heart Gallery program and featured in KVUE's Forever Families segments are children who have had every effort made on their behalf to connect them with family or others in their community to provide options for permanent, adoptive homes. Through no fault of their own, that hasn’t happened yet, and so in partnership with the Department of Family and Protective Services, we collaborate to bring awareness to KVUE viewers about these children in the hopes of finding them permanency before they age out.
