'People have been waiting for an alternative to I-35 for a long time' | Ribbon cutting held to celebrate completion of FM 110 in Hays County

The new two-lane roadway is designed to serve as an alternative to I-35, with the goal of alleviating congestion on the interstate.

AUSTIN, Texas — The completion of the new FM 110 roadway in Hays County was commemorated with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday.

The $36.5 million project started in March 2022 and was finished in December 2023 – several months ahead of schedule according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The new road added two new travel lanes and shoulders and completed a loop on the east side of San Marcos, including the addition of a bridge over State Highway 21. It can also serve as a juncture to pass through San Marcos heading toward Interstate 10 or U.S. Highway 130.

The 6.5-mile road is designed to serve as an alternative route to Interstate 35 in a continuously growing Hays County.

Officials with TxDOT were joined by officials from the state, Hays County and locals at Wednesday's ceremony.

“We celebrate the completion of the final portion of a roadway that will transform transportation in Hays County,” TxDOT Austin District Engineer Tucker Ferguson said at Wednesday's ceremony. “As you drive through here you can see the growth and the development, and this roadway addresses the transportation needs of this region, providing an alternative to I-35.”

"I think it's very important ... it is tremendously being utilized already," Hays County Commissioner for Precinct 1 Debbie Gonzales Ingalsbe said. "We've had economic development start-up, and more to come. So I think it's extremely important and people have been waiting for an alternative to I-35 for a long time."
