ROUND ROCK, Texas — As Central Texas continues to experience booming growth, some local cities are working on sprucing up their downtowns. We took a look at how three Central Texas cities are modernizing their downtown areas.
In Round Rock, many of the improvements to downtown are in the planning stages or in progress right now. On the list is adding more housing, including an 80-townhome development called The Depot; expanding parks; improving infrastructure; and adding parking.
A new library, new roads and a lot of new business are also coming to Downtown Round Rock.
In Pflugerville, plans are ramping up to expand the actual downtown footprint. The big ticket is a new city center called "Downtown East," which will be home to a new city hall and a recreation center.
Downtown East will also be home to businesses that wouldn't work as well in the city's more historic areas. Pflugerville will extend Main Street to connect the new with the old.
On a smaller scale, Hutto is trying to blend the old with the new – and it's getting community members involved in the process.
Next to the historic downtown, development is ramping up on a 35-acre co-op district. Two new restaurants are also expected to open this year. However, for the most part, Hutto's development proposals are still hypothetical or under discussion.
