Woman accused of completing more than $35K in fraudulent transactions after stealing credit cards in Austin

Destini Robinson allegedly pretended to be an Uber driver, then stole victims' phones and credit cards.

AUSTIN, Texas — A woman is accused of credit card abuse after allegedly conducting more than $35,000 in fraudulent transactions last fall.

According to an affidavit obtained by KVUE, 41-year-old Destini Robinson allegedly drugged and stole money from victims on two separate occasions.

A man told police that on Aug. 6, 2023, he got into a vehicle he believed to be his Uber when trying to return home after a night out in Downtown Austin. Shortly after getting into the vehicle, the man said he blacked out and eventually woke up at home, with no memory of how he got there.

He then discovered his credit cards, phone and cash were nowhere to be found.

When he checked his bank accounts, he found fraudulent transactions in Austin, Katy and Houston, adding up to more than $11,000.

A little more than a month later, a similar incident happened again in Downtown Austin.

The affidavit states that on Sept. 22, 2023, a man said he entered a vehicle he believed to be his Uber in an attempt to return to his hotel room from downtown. The man said the driver offered him a drink from an open container, which he accepted. He then blacked out.

The man did not wake up until the following morning, when he found himself on the side of a road near his hotel, covered in dirt and mud. His phone and credit/debit cards were missing, but his driver's license and hotel room key were still inside his wallet.

The man said when he woke up, he felt as if he had been drugged. He returned to his hotel room, where he passed out again.

When the man awoke the second time, he discovered his cards and the banking apps on his phone had been used to conduct more than $24,000 worth of unauthorized purchases.

After investigating both of these incidents further, a detective with the Austin Police Department's Robbery Unit was able to obtain 14 credit card abuse arrest warrants for Robinson.

Using cellphone data records, an APD crime analyst determined Robinson's personal phone was located near the second victim's hotel on Sept. 22. Her phone was also located near Walmarts in Austin, Round Rock, Pflugerville and Sunset Valley, as well as a Target store in Pflugerville.

Credit card abuse is a state jail felony.
