Man killed by APD at northeast Austin apartment after holding BB gun identified

Police said the man, identified as 63-year-old Konrad Khorshahian, was firing a BB gun in the parking lot of the complex before pointing it at officers.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man who was shot and killed by Austin police after holding a BB gun at an apartment complex on Tuesday afternoon has been identified.

On Friday, Austin police identified the man killed as 63-year-old Konrad Khorshahian.

According to APD Interim Chief of Police Robin Henderson, officers were called out to the complex along East Howard Lane near Dessau Road just after 1 p.m.

Henderson initially said Khorshahian was firing a rifle in the parking lot before pointing it at officers as they drove through the parking lot. In an update on Wednesday, APD confirmed to KVUE that Khorshahian had actually been holding a BB gun.

Both officers exited the vehicle and immediately took cover, demanding that Khorshahian drop his weapon, according to police. That's when police say he yelled that he wanted officers to shoot him.

After officers gave more verbal commands, shots were fired by police around 1:30 p.m. According to APD, EMS arrived about five minutes after Khorshahian was shot, but he was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:48 p.m.

The shooting is still being investigated. The APD officer who fired his gun will be placed on administrative duty pending the results of the investigation. APD says the officer has four and a half years of service with the Department.

Bodycam footage of the shooting will also be released within 10 business days, according to police protocol.
