AUSTIN, Texas — Court documents reveal how a deadly shooting unfolded in northeast Austin earlier this month.
Austin police were called to a nightclub on East Braker Lane just before 2 a.m. When they arrived, they found two people in the parking lot with gunshot wounds.
However, an affidavit revealed before the shooting a group of men were arguing in the parking lot before a fight broke out between 30-year-old Tyler Cochran and 20-year-old Clayton Taitague.
Bodycam footage obtained by a nearby security guard shows two people with Taitague joined the fight before everything broke up. Someone pulled a gun out which Taitague tried to take before being pushed away. A second person is heard on video saying the group needs to leave before Taitague gets his hands on the gun.
The affidavit states Taitague walks over to Cochran and shoots him nine times before the security guard shoots Taitague. Cochran died at the scene while police say Taitague remains in the hospital.
Taitague is currently under arrest and charged with murder. Once he's released from the hospital, online records show he'll be held in Travis County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
Cochran's death is being investigated as Austin's 56th homicide of 2024.
Police investigate liquor licenses in northeast Austin
After the shooting, Austin police began working on a plan to investigate liquor licenses in the area.
Police Chief Lisa Davis said in 2023, there were 34 calls for service in the area. That number has nearly doubled this year with 61 calls for service ranging from shootings, aggravated assaults and robberies, celebratory gunfire and criminal behavior.
Authorities said the increase and "intensity" of the calls have strained patrol resources and had an impact on the community. Police plan to meet with the community and work with other city departments to address safety in the area.
