Murder charges filed after shooting in East Austin leaves 13-year-old dead

Two juveniles were charged in the apparent robbery on Thurgood Avenue.

AUSTIN, Texas — Charges have been filed against two people following a deadly shootout in East Austin.

Police were called out to Thurgood Avenue on Aug. 22 after a person was found with a gunshot wound and later pronounced dead at the scene.

During their investigation, police learned that 13-year-old Jeremiah Cavazos was shot and killed during a shootout.

Police say Cavazos and another underage suspect drove a stolen vehicle to the area to meet a second underage suspect. Cavazos and the suspect he was with then appeared to rob the person they were meeting, which led to a shootout.

After Cavazos was shot, he and the person he was with got back in the vehicle, according to police. Cavazos was then thrown from the back seat and onto the pavement. Meanwhile, the second underage suspect left the scene on foot.

The person who was with Cavazos during the shootout has been arrested and charged with capital murder. The second underage suspect was also arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Meanwhile, police say anyone with information should contact them at 512-974-TIPS. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for any information leading to an arrest.

Cavazos' death is under investigation as the 40th homicide in Austin in 2024.
