Man charged with murder as APD identifies skeletal remains found on South Austin greenbelt

Melcolm Martin Lee, 24, was arrested in East Austin earlier this week after trying to escape from police.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police have identified the skeletal remains found along an Austin greenbelt.

Melcolm Martin Lee, 24, was charged with murder after the body of Jehu Patrick Flores was found in the West Bouldin Creek Greenbelt in late November.

Lee was arrested by members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force on Wednesday at an encampment on Parker Lane in East Austin. Authorities say Lee, who was identified as a known as a transient in the area, attempted to escape custody but was subdued by an Austin Police K-9 Unit.

The Austin Police Department (APD) Homicide Unit began investigating the incident after skeletal remains were found at the West Bouldin Creek Greenbelt in the 1100 block of South Sixth Street.

According to APD, the Homicide Unit received multiple tips in late November of a murder that had occurred in the area months prior. Tipsters said the victim had been buried somewhere in the area.

Detectives and crime scene specialists executed a K-9 search of the area on Nov. 29, and located skeletal remains that matched the description provided by tipsters.

The remains were collected by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office with assistance from the Texas State Anthropology Department. An autopsy performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed injuries typically seen in a homicide.

This incident is considered Austin's 65th homicide of 2023.
