AUSTIN, Texas — Nearly a year after a mother and were son were memorialized in far East Austin, their killer has been sentenced.

Records show David Ontiveros will spend life in prison for killing his wife and stepson in April 2022.

At the time, police said Ontiveros called 911 from his home on Garden View Drive to report that he shot and killed his wife and stepson, later identified as 39-year-old Christina Michelle Limón and 14-year-old Rudy Xavier Limón Lira.

Police said both victims were found inside the home with obvious life-threatening trauma. Limón Lira was pronounced dead at the scene, while Limón died from her injuries that night.

In November 2023, a bench was unveiled at Heritage Village Pocket Park to honor Limón and Limón Lira and remind Austinites about the effects of family violence.

In 2022, Travis County had the fifth-highest number of domestic homicides in Texas. It's something The SAFE Alliance is working to bring down.

The Austin Travis County Family Violence Task Force is also working to lower domestic violence numbers. It is working on a firearms surrender protocol that would require anyone convicted of domestic violence to turn in any weapons they own.
