APD identifies suspect, woman killed during violent attack at northeast Austin home

Austin police said the man allegedly stabbed his partner to death after the two got into a physical altercation.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man faces multiple charges following a violent attack in northeast Austin.

Jose Reynaldo Martinez-Argueta, 26, was shot by Austin police on Jan. 21 after allegedly killing a woman during a stabbing at a home on Uttimer Lane. Two other people also suffered life-threatening injuries during the attack.

What happened?

Austin police said they received a call just before 12:30 a.m. from someone claiming they were "bleeding a lot" after being stabbed multiple times. They also told police the suspect was still inside the home with a woman and holding a knife.

When officers arrived, one of the victims was standing with a group of people outside of the home. As officers gathered information, they heard screams inside the house and decided to make their way inside.

That's when they allegedly discovered Martinez-Argueta with a knife holding a woman with multiple stab wounds. Officers shot Martinez-Argueta and then escorted the woman and three unharmed children out of the house safely.

As police searched the home, they found 30-year-old Maryuri Leticia Reconco-Moncada on the floor of a bedroom with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. During the investigation, police learned Reconco-Moncada was in a relationship with Martinez-Argueta and that the two were involved in a physical disturbance before the stabbing.

Martinez-Argueta now faces a murder charge and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in jail on a combined bond of $3.1 million.

Meanwhile, the Austin Police Department said the three officers who shot Martinez-Argueta remain on administrative leave, per department policy. Bodycam footage of the shooting is expected to be released next week.
