What you should look into before sending your kids to summer camp

Here are some things to look into to keep your kids safe before sending them to summer camp.

AUSTIN, Texas — The video above was published on June 5.

More deadly child drownings have been reported in 2019 so far than all of 2018, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.

A young girl died June 5 after a near-drowning at a public Cedar Park pool where she was swimming with fellow summer camp members.

Summer can be a busy time for parents, especially having to balance work life and keeping their kids busy while they are not in school.

Some parents may want to send their kids to a summer camp. Before picking a camp, parents may want to verify the safety of the camp.

You can check to see if your child's camp is licensed by the state by going to the Texas Health and Human Services website. There, you'll find a section to search for the youth camp license.

Youth camps that are licensed by the state have to follow certain criteria and send in necessary documentation and fees to the Environmental and Sanitation Licensing Group. You can see more information here.

Camps can also receive accreditation through the American Camp Association (ACA). ACA mandates certain standards such as medical care, medical transportation and CPR training and criminal background checks.

ACA claims that only 25% of camps get accredited through the agency. A searchable list of those camps can be found here.
