AUSTIN, Texas — Wondering how to give back to fellow Austinites as the holidays are around the corner? Check out these opportunities!  

H-E-B Feast of Sharing 

H-E-B and United Way for Greater Austin's 30th annual Feast of Sharing will be held on Nov. 26 at the Palmer Events Center located at 900 Barton Springs Rd.

This event feeds more than 14,000 Central Texans, and H-E-B needs the help of volunteers.

The two volunteer shifts offered are 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Volunteers must sign up beforehand and must be at least 14 years old.

How to help the homeless in Austin

Operation Turkey

Operation Turkey will be held at three locations across Austin and involves preparing, packaging and delivering meals and care packages to the homeless and less fortunate on Thanksgiving Day.

Locations included are:

  • P.F. Chang's, 10114 Jollyville Rd., Austin, TX, 78759
  • Güero's Taco Bar, 1412 S. Congress Ave., Austin, TX, 78704
  • P.F. Chang's, 201 San Jacinto Blvd., Austin, TX, 78701

Each location's hours will be from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The event will be come and goes as you like, and all ages are encouraged to volunteer – just sign up beforehand.

Austin Empty Bowl Project

Grab your friends and family on Nov. 24, and purchase a locally created ceramic bowl with soup and bread. The $25 donation will go back to the Kids Cafe, a program in part of the Central Texas Food Bank. 

The Austin Empty Bowl Project is an effort founded by potters held annually the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

This event will be held from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Central Texas Food Bank.

Coats for Kids

The Junior League of Austin is holding its annual Coats for Kid drive leading up to the Coats for Kids Distribution Day on Dec. 7. 

Jack Brown Cleaners and KVUE, along with the Junior League of Austin and KVET Radio, collect more than 30,000 donated coats for Central Texas kids each year.

You can make a donation as little as $20 for a child's winter coat through the organization's website, or you can make a stop at KVUE at 3201 Steck Ave. or any Jack Brown Cleaners location until Dec. 4 with a donation of a winter coat.

ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot

ThunderCloud Subs is holding its 29th Annual Turkey Trot on Nov. 28. The Turkey Trot is a five-mile run that draws nearly 20,000 participants each year. All proceeds from this event go directly to Caritas of Austin, a nonprofit group that helps Austin's homeless population.

You can register to participate or volunteer in the event online.
