AUSTIN, Texas — The Central Texas Food Bank says there's a high demand for summer meals for kids.
The food bank is teaming up with local groups to make sure kids don't go hungry while school is out.
At 90 different sites throughout Central Texas, local organizations are giving out free lunches to kids. The meals are prepared at the food bank, ranging from sandwiches to pasta.
"Every single year, we see the need spike. It's rising energy ... Increased child care costs, all these factors are coming together to really put families in a pinch that's why we want to have critical programming like the summer meal program," Chief Development Officer Mark Jackson said.
This summer, the Central Texas Food Bank will distribute 6,000 meals to kids in the community by going to sites like the Boys & Girls Club and the Austin Recreation Center.
"One in five children are at risk of hunger in Central Texas, which is absolutely unacceptable," Jackson said. "That's why we are so committed to these types of programs."
Each site has a registration program to sign up to get the free meals. The summer food program runs until Aug. 9.
