Lightning strike sparks fire in Cedar Park, sheriff's office says

The fire broke out in the Cypress Mill neighborhood.

CEDAR PARK, Texas — Cedar Park officials worked to put out two house fires on Wednesday caused by cloud-to-ground lightning, not direct lightning strikes to the homes

According to the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, one of the houses is located in the 1400 block of Old Mill Road. That's in the Cypress Mill neighborhood near Anderson Mill Road and Cypress Creek Road. The sheriff's office tweeted about the fire shortly after 7 a.m. March 4.

The Cedar Park Fire Department responded with assistance from the Leander, Jollyville and Sam Bass Fire Departments.

Everyone made it out of the house safely with no injuries. Investigators believe that after the lightning struck the ground, it traveled through electrical conduit to the home's irrigation system.

The second fire happened on the 2700 block of Grand Oaks Loop around 12:05 p.m.

The same departments responded and everyone escaped safely. This time, the fire was sparked after the lightning caused an arc between the gas line and furnance in the attic.

KVUE's Mariel Ruiz reported that in the span of just 15 minutes Wednesday morning, there were 160 lightning strikes between Round Rock and North Austin.
