AUSTIN, Texas — Murder charges have been filed against an 18-year-old for his role in a deadly shooting in southeast Austin.

Court documents show Stephon Morson was recently arrested for a shooting at an apartment complex on Burton Drive that happened in October.

Police said 20-year-old Keshawn Cage was killed in the shooting, and that bloody footprints and and a fired cartridge case were found near Cage's body.

An affidavit states that the day after the shooting, Morson voluntarily interviewed with investigators after being identified as someone with "knowledge of events" before the shooting. Morson wasn't wearing shoes when he showed up to the interview and claimed to be wearing a borrowed hoodie.

During the interview, Morson also claimed he wasn't wearing shoes or a shirt at the time of the murder, which was common for him.

Investigators reviewed video footage of the incident, which didn't show the murder, but an officer familiar with the area identified Morson in one of the videos. He was allegedly spotted wearing tan Yeezy shoes and a black Nike hoodie about 20 minutes before Cage's murder.

An investigator said a pair of blood-stained Yeezys and a Nike hoodie were found in the parking lot of the apartment complex. An employee at the apartment complex threw them away because they assumed it was trash before police seized the items.

Investigators said the Yeezys matched bloody footprints left at the scene and that the shoes, hoodie and a gun were found about 500 feet from where Cage was killed. Morson initially denied being in the area during the shooting before admitting he was present when it occurred.

Morson has been charged with murder and remains in Travis County Jail on an $800,000 bond.

Cage's death is Austin's 53rd homicide of 2024.
